Coursera

Coursera is an online learning platform: courses, Specializations, Professional Certificates and online degrees from more than 350 universities and companies, among them Google, IBM, Microsoft, Anthropic and Stanford.

It suits founders who want a structured course with graded work and a certificate from a name people know, in AI, data, software, marketing or business. Since May 2026 Coursera and Udemy are one company, with the two sites run separately.

Most courses can be previewed free and some are free outright; Coursera Plus opens 10,000+ courses for $59 a month or $399 a year, as checked on 30 October 2026.

Our take
Founders who want structure and a certificate from a name people know. Take Google's or IBM's AI programmes, a Stanford course or a marketing certificate, and with Coursera Plus take as many as you finish for one price.
Pricing
FreemiumMid priceMost courses can be previewed free, the first module in full, and a few, such as Claude Code 101 from Anthropic, are free without a certificate. Coursera Plus is $59 a month after a 7-day free trial, or $399 a year with a 14-day money-back guarantee, and covers more than 90% of the catalogue, as checked on 30 October 2026; Coursera says prices can vary by location. A single course is one payment for 180 days of access, and a Specialization or Professional Certificate is a monthly subscription, each priced at checkout. A monthly plan is not refunded once its trial ends.

The IndieHacked breakdown

What it does

Coursera sells courses made by universities and companies. A single course is paid once and stays open for 180 days; Specializations and Professional Certificates bundle several courses into a monthly subscription that ends when you finish, with a certificate for each course and one for the set. Bachelor's and master's degrees from partner universities run fully online.

Coursera Plus opens more than 90% of the catalogue, over 10,000 courses, Guided Projects and certificates, with no limit on how many certificates you earn. Degree courses and some Professional Certificates are left out, because each partner decides whether its content joins. Subjects include AI, data science, computer science, business and marketing, from Google, IBM, Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic and Stanford among others.

Who it suits

Founders filling a gap they can name: the data skills to read their own metrics, a grounding in machine learning before building on it, a marketing programme before a first launch. Courses come from the companies and universities that work in the subject, with graded assignments and a certificate at the end.

Coursera Plus fits a founder who will take several courses in a year. The monthly plan starts with a 7-day trial, and the yearly one is $399. Coursera calls Plus "a substantial value for anyone planning to complete multiple programs in a year."

Not the right fit for

Founders who want a short course on one tool and to keep it. A single Coursera course is open for 180 days from payment, not for life; Udemy, now part of the same company, sells courses by independent instructors with lifetime access.

Founders who want a certificate without paying, or one account for a team. Previews and free courses carry no certificate, Coursera itself grants no academic credit, and its terms limit an account to personal, non-commercial use; a team buys Coursera for Teams, at $399 a licence a year.
