What it does
Codecademy teaches programming and technical skills through interactive lessons: you read a short explanation and write the code in the browser, with no setup, and an AI Learning Assistant explains errors. Lessons are grouped into courses, skill paths for one skill such as building a website or analysing data, career paths toward a role such as Full-Stack Engineer, and certification paths that prepare for exams from AWS, Microsoft and CompTIA.
AI Builder turns a description into a web app in HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and its Learn tab explains what was built and suggests a learning path from your prototype; prototypes cannot be deployed yet. Plus and Pro add certificates of completion, portfolio projects and, on Pro, professional certifications after a set of exams. Live bootcamps run separately or through All Access, and lessons also run in the iOS and Android apps.
Who it suits
Founders who build with AI tools and want to read what those tools write: a Python script that cleans their data, the SQL behind their metrics, the JavaScript in their landing page. Beginner courses start from the first line of code, and a path sets the order, so the next course is chosen for you.
It fits a founder who wants to try before paying. Basic has free courses with no time limit, Plus and Pro come with a 7-day trial, and billed yearly Plus is $14.99 a month.
Not the right fit for
Founders who want a certificate from a university or a company a reader knows. Codecademy's certificates of completion mark a finished course or path, and its professional certifications are its own; Coursera, reviewed here, has Professional Certificates and degrees from Google, IBM and universities.
Founders who want a working product this month rather than the skill to build one. AI Builder makes prototypes for learning and cannot deploy them yet; Lovable, reviewed here, builds the web app, hosts it and syncs the code to GitHub.
