The IndieHacked breakdown
What it does
Astro, made by 28 bit in San Marino and not to be confused with the web framework, is a Mac app for App Store keyword research. Add your app, pick a country and add keywords, and it shows each keyword's popularity, a difficulty score, your position and the apps ranking for it. Popularity comes from Apple Ads; difficulty is Astro's own algorithm, scoring how hard it is to reach the top 10.
Rankings and ratings update every 24 hours while the app is open, with a chart of each keyword's history. Suggestions come from the keywords your app ranks for and from a database built by Astro's users, and pasting a competitor's App Store link pulls its keywords. A local MCP server lets Claude Code, Cursor or VS Code read your data.
Who it suits
Indie iOS developers who do their own App Store optimization. Popularity, difficulty and your position sit in one table, so you can choose the keywords worth chasing before a release and see whether they moved you after it.
The price suits a small catalogue that tracks a lot of words: one plan, and Astro says thousands of keywords cost nothing extra. It covers 91 App Store countries, every one where Apple Ads runs, and it can research an app that is not out yet.
Not the right fit for
Developers with an Android app to grow as well. Astro covers the Apple App Store only, "designed exclusively for Apple Developers" in its own words, so Google Play keywords need another tool.
Teams who want shared access, or tracking that runs without a Mac. A licence is for one Mac, the data lives in a file on it, and rankings update only while the app is running. It needs macOS 14 or later.
