Zendesk
Zendesk is a help desk built on tickets: customer emails, chats, calls and social messages become tickets your team routes and answers, with a help center and AI agents that resolve requests on their own.
It suits founders who expect support to grow into a team working several channels, phone among them.
There is no free plan; after a 14-day trial, Support Team is $25 an agent a month billed monthly for email ticketing, and Suite Team, which adds live chat, a help center and phone, is $69, as checked on 30 October 2026.

- Our take
- Founders who expect support to become a team working several channels, phone among them. Start on email tickets, add live chat, a help center and AI agents on Suite Team, and grow into skills-based routing, a phone tree and community forums on the same system.

The IndieHacked breakdown
What it does
Zendesk turns each customer request, by email, web form, chat, phone or social message, into a ticket your team routes, tags and answers from one workspace, with pre-written responses, automations and prebuilt dashboards. Support Team covers email ticketing; Suite Team adds messaging and live chat for your site or app, a knowledge base, routing across channels and telephony.
AI agents answer customers on messaging and email in more than 80 languages, and Zendesk says one launches in three clicks with no scripting. Its Knowledge Builder drafts a knowledge base from your ticket history. Since 18 May 2026, only resolutions that a language model verifies after the conversation ends count against your allowance.
Who it suits
Founders who expect support to grow past one inbox: a team, several channels and phone. Suite Professional adds skills-based routing, an IVR phone tree, community forums and HIPAA-enabled accounts, and Zendesk says growing teams add channels and volume without a migration.
Funded startups can apply to Zendesk for Startups: up to 2 years free for up to 50 agents, depending on the funding and the partner. It takes new customers that have raised an angel, pre-seed, seed, Series A or Series B round, with 50 or fewer employees, or up to 249 when a partner refers them.
Not the right fit for
Bootstrapped founders who want to start free. Zendesk has no free plan and its startup program asks for outside funding; Help Scout, reviewed here, is free for up to 5 users, and its startup offer of 6 months free asks about revenue and company age instead.
Solo founders who mainly want live chat on their site. Support Team covers email only, so chat starts at Suite Team, $69 an agent a month billed monthly; Intercom and Help Scout, both reviewed here, include live chat on their first paid plan.
