The IndieHacked breakdown
What it does
Wise Business holds and converts money in 40+ currencies and gives the business account details to receive in 22, so a customer abroad pays it as a local transfer. You get paid by invoice, payment link or card, and pay suppliers one at a time or up to 1,000 contractors at once with BatchTransfer; Wise says 96% of its payments took under 24 hours in Q3 2025.
Physical and digital Multi-Currency Cards go to the team, with spending permissions and access set per person, transactions sync to accounting software, and an API sends payments from your own systems. In the US, Wise is a money service business registered with FinCEN, not an FDIC-insured bank: pass-through FDIC insurance covers only balances in its opt-in interest feature.
Who it suits
Founders with customers or costs abroad: a European founder selling to US customers holds the dollars, converts when it suits, and pays a contractor elsewhere from the same account. With no monthly fee, a side project with a few foreign customers pays the setup fee and then only for what it moves.
It sits beside the books, not in place of them. Wise syncs transactions in each currency to Xero and QuickBooks, both reviewed here, and to Fortnox, Zoho Books and FreeAgent, so the bookkeeping stays in the software your accountant uses.
Not the right fit for
Founders looking for accounting software. Wise holds, moves and spends the money and passes the transactions on; the books and reports live in Xero or QuickBooks Online, both reviewed here.
US founders who want their operating cash in an FDIC-insured bank account. Wise is not a bank, and its pass-through FDIC insurance applies only to balances in the opt-in interest feature, so those funds belong at a bank.
