Supabase

Supabase is a hosted Postgres backend: a database with generated APIs, sign-in, file storage, realtime updates and server functions, open source and built from code, SQL or an AI agent.

It suits founders who write some code, or build with Claude Code, Cursor or Lovable, and want a database they can take with them.

The free plan covers 2 projects that pause after a week of low activity; Pro is $25 a month with one small database included, as checked on 30 October 2026.

What it does
A hosted Postgres database with sign-in, file storage, realtime and server functions, open source and built from code, SQL or your AI agent.
Our take
Founders who write some code, or build with an AI agent, and want a real Postgres database without running a server. Sign-in, storage and functions come in the same project, and Supabase's MCP server lets Claude Code, Codex or Cursor run migrations and deploy functions for you.
Pricing
FreemiumMid priceFree: 2 active projects, each with a 500 MB database, 1 GB of file storage and 50,000 monthly active users, paused after a week of low activity. Pro is $25 a month per organisation, billed monthly, and includes $10 of compute credits, enough for one project on the Micro instance; each further project adds its own compute, from $10 a month, so 2 projects cost $35. Usage past Pro's quotas is billed per unit, unless the spend cap, on by default, stops it. Team is $599 a month, and a custom domain is $10 a month per project, as checked on 30 October 2026.

The IndieHacked breakdown

What it does

Supabase gives each project its own Postgres database and generates REST and GraphQL APIs from your tables, so the app reads and writes data without a server of your own. Sign-in (email and password, magic links, phone and 20+ social providers), S3-compatible file storage, realtime updates and Edge Functions in TypeScript come in the same project, and Postgres row level security decides who sees what.

You work in the dashboard's Table Editor and SQL Editor, from the CLI with local development and migrations, or through your AI agent with Supabase's MCP server and agent skills. The core tools are open source and can be self-hosted with Docker, and any Postgres client or ORM, Prisma and Drizzle among them, connects to the database directly.

Who it suits

Founders who can write some code, or work with an agent that does, and want a real database without running one. A first version needs one account: data, sign-in, files and server code sit in one project. Because it is Postgres, the data goes where you go, to a self-hosted Supabase or any other Postgres host.

It fits a founder building with AI. Supabase names Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and GitHub Copilot among the agents it connects to, to query data, run migrations and deploy functions, and Lovable, reviewed here, builds its backend on Supabase's foundation and can connect a Supabase project of your own.

Not the right fit for

Founders who want to build the backend without code or SQL. Supabase gives you the database and its editors, and the logic lives in SQL policies and TypeScript functions. Xano, reviewed here, builds each endpoint as readable steps in a visual editor.

Founders building a mobile app who want crash reports, analytics and push notifications from the same place as the data. Supabase's products stop at the backend. Firebase, reviewed here, adds Crashlytics, Analytics and Cloud Messaging with no usage fee, and Supabase's own comparison says Firebase "offers an excellent developer experience for prototypes and simple applications."
