Slack
Slack is team chat: channels for each project or topic, direct messages, huddles for calls and screen sharing, and Slack Connect for talking with people at other companies, with AI that summarises channels and huddles on the paid plans.
It suits founders with a co-founder, contractors or customers to talk to every day, and tools that should post into the conversation.
Free keeps 90 days of messages; Pro is $8.75 a user a month billed monthly, as checked on 30 October 2026.

- What it does
- Team chat in channels, with huddles for calls, channels shared with other companies and more than 2,600 apps posting in.
- Our take
- Founders with a co-founder, contractors or customers to talk to every day. Channels keep each project's conversation in one place, apps such as Google Drive, Jira or Linear post into them, and Claude Code and Cursor can search and send messages through Slack's MCP server once an admin approves them.
- Pricing
- FreemiumLow priceFree shows the last 90 days of messages and files, deletes data after a year, and allows 10 apps, 1:1 huddles and 1:1 messages with people outside the company. Pro is $8.75 a user a month billed monthly, with unlimited history and apps, group huddles, channels shared with up to 250 other organisations and AI summaries of channels, threads and huddles. Business+ is $18 billed monthly, or $15 a month billed yearly, and adds Slackbot as a personal AI agent, AI search, daily recaps, single sign-on and SCIM, as checked on 30 October 2026. Yearly billing saves about 16%, by Salesforce's Slack pricing page. Slack bills only members who used it in the past 28 days, and a team that upgrades within 7 days of creating its workspace gets 50% off monthly billing for 3 months.
The IndieHacked breakdown
What it does
Slack organises a company's conversation into channels, one per project, topic or team, alongside direct messages, threads, huddles for audio and video calls with screen sharing, and clips for recorded audio or screen messages. Canvases hold documents and Lists track tasks inside Slack, and Slack Connect brings people from other companies into a shared channel.
More than 2,600 apps connect from the Slack Marketplace, and Workflow Builder automates routine tasks without code. Slack summarises channels, threads and huddles on the paid plans, Slackbot answers from what you can see in Slack, and Slack Code opens a code channel where an agent writes the code while the team follows along and approves the result. Slack's MCP server lets Claude, Claude Code, Cursor and Perplexity search, read and post in your workspace.
Who it suits
Founders who work with other people daily: a co-founder, contractors in other time zones, early customers. Channels keep each conversation findable, a huddle replaces a scheduled call, and on Pro a shared Slack Connect channel with a customer or an agency sits next to the internal ones.
It also fits a founder whose tools should report into one place. Linear, reviewed here, creates issues from Slack messages and syncs the threads both ways, and Slack bills only members active in the past 28 days, so a contractor who drops off stops costing money.
Not the right fit for
Founders working alone. Slack's value is the conversation between people, and on Free a huddle or a message with someone outside the company is 1:1 and messages older than 90 days are hidden. A solo founder keeping notes, plans and tasks is better served by Notion, reviewed here.
Teams who want the plan, not the chat, to be the record of what is being built. Slack has Lists and canvases, but a software team's issues, cycles and roadmap live in Linear, reviewed here, which links each issue back to the Slack thread it came from.
