Gumroad
Gumroad is a platform for selling digital products: you upload an ebook, course, template, piece of software or membership, set a price and share the link or your Gumroad storefront, and Gumroad runs the checkout and pays you out.
It suits founders who want to sell their first digital product this week, with no store to build and no monthly bill.
It has no monthly fee; Gumroad takes 10% + $0.50 of each sale through your own links, plus card processing, and 30% of sales it finds for you through its Discover marketplace, as checked on 30 October 2026.

- Our take
- Founders who want to sell a first digital product, such as a template, an ebook, a course or a software licence, without building a store. Upload it, set a price and share the link: Gumroad runs the checkout, collects and remits sales tax as the merchant of record, and costs nothing until something sells.
- Pricing
- PaidNo monthly fee and no plan to pick, as checked on 30 October 2026. On a sale through your profile or a link you share, Gumroad takes 10% + $0.50, and card processing (2.9% + $0.30) or PayPal's fees come on top. A sale to a new customer who found you through Discover, Gumroad's marketplace, costs a flat 30%, processing included. Once your paid sales pass $20,000 in a calendar month, new direct sales that month drop to 5% + $0.50. Sales tax is added for the buyer and remitted by Gumroad as the merchant of record. Payouts start at a $100 balance, and a sale waits at least 7 days before it pays out on a weekly or monthly schedule.
The IndieHacked breakdown
What it does
Gumroad sells digital products for you: ebooks, courses, templates, music, design assets, software and memberships. You add a product, set a price, a pay-what-you-want minimum or a subscription, and share its link, embed it on your own site or list it on a storefront at your own Gumroad subdomain or a custom domain. Buyers get the file right after paying, and for software Gumroad can generate licence keys.
Gumroad is the merchant of record, so it collects and remits sales tax wherever it owes it. Your audience tools sit in the same account: email broadcasts, automated workflows, offer codes and affiliates, and Discover lists your products in Gumroad's marketplace. Through Gumroad's MCP connector, listed in Claude's connector directory, an assistant can check sales, draft and publish products and track payouts.
Who it suits
Founders testing whether an idea sells before building more around it. Gumroad's home page tells sellers to place small bets, such as selling a blog post before a book, and the pricing fits that: there is nothing to pay until the first sale, and a product can be live the day it is made.
It also fits a founder who sells to an audience they already have, on a newsletter or social media. A shared link costs 10% + $0.50 a sale, the marketplace's 30% applies only to buyers Discover finds, and your followers and customers can be exported at any time.
Not the right fit for
Founders building a full store for physical products, with inventory, shipping and in-person sales. Shopify, reviewed here, runs the whole store for a monthly plan, and WooCommerce, also reviewed here, does it on your own WordPress site.
Founders who expect Gumroad's marketplace to find their buyers. Discover lists your products, but a sale it brings in costs 30%, against 10% + $0.50 on a link you share yourself, so Gumroad costs least when you bring the audience yourself.
