ElevenLabs

ElevenLabs is an AI voice generator: text to speech in 70+ languages from a library of voices or a clone of your own, with dubbing, transcription, music, sound effects and video models drawing on the same credits.

It suits founders who need voiceovers for product videos, ads or an audio version of their content, and developers adding a voice to their own app through its API.

The free plan gives 10,000 credits a month for non-commercial use; Starter is $6 a month with a commercial licence, as checked on 30 October 2026.

Our take
Founders who need a voiceover and do not want to record one, or who want their own voice without a microphone each time. Clone your voice from a short sample, write the script, and have it read in 70+ languages, or add a voice to your own product through the API, the MCP server or a Startup Grant.

The IndieHacked breakdown

What it does

ElevenLabs makes speech from text in more than 70 languages, from a voice in its library, a voice designed from a prompt, or a clone of your own: Instant Voice Cloning works from a short recording, Professional Voice Cloning from 30 minutes or more. Around it sit transcription (Scribe), dubbing that translates a video and keeps the speaker's voice, Eleven Music, sound effects, and video and image models such as Veo, Kling and Seedance.

Studio is the editor that ties them together: voiceover, music, sound effects and captions on one timeline, with an agent that drafts the script and places the clips. Developers use the same models through the API, with Python and Node.js SDKs, and the hosted MCP server lets Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT or Cursor generate speech, music, images and video from your workspace, signed in once with OAuth.

Who it suits

Founders who need a voice on their content without recording it: a product demo voiceover, an ad in several languages, an audio version of a blog post, an explainer read in their own cloned voice. A paid plan carries the commercial licence, and content made while subscribed can be used commercially after you cancel.

It fits a founder building voice into the product itself, such as a reading feature, a voice agent or a dubbing step. The API has pay-as-you-go prices per model, and ElevenLabs' Startup Grants give early-stage companies 12 months of access with 33 million characters, after an application it answers within a week.

Not the right fit for

Founders who record themselves on camera or on screen and want to edit that footage. ElevenLabs' tools start from text and generated audio; Descript, reviewed here, records your screen, camera or a remote guest and edits the video by its transcript.

Founders who want a free voiceover for a launch video or an ad. The free plan is for non-commercial use only and must credit ElevenLabs in the title; the commercial licence starts with Starter at $6 a month.
