Descript

Descript is a video and podcast editor where you edit the recording by editing its transcript: delete a sentence and it is cut from the video, while Underlord, its AI co-editor, makes rough cuts, captions and clips on request.

It suits founders who record their own product demos, tutorials, webinars or podcast episodes and want them cut without learning a timeline editor.

The free plan exports at 720p with a watermark; Hobbyist is $24 a month, or $16 a month billed yearly, as checked on 30 October 2026.

What it does
Edit video and podcasts by editing the transcript, with an AI co-editor, screen and remote recording, captions and clips in the same app.
Our take
Founders who record their own demos, tutorials and podcast episodes and want them cut without learning a timeline. Edit the words to edit the video, let Underlord remove filler words and make the social clips, and drive it from Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor through Descript's MCP server.
Pricing
FreemiumMid priceFree: 60 media minutes a month, 100 AI credits once, and 720p exports with a Descript watermark. Hobbyist is $24 a month billed monthly, or $16 a month billed yearly, with 10 media hours, 400 AI credits and 1080p exports; Creator is $35, or $24 yearly, with 30 hours, 800 credits and 4K; Business is $65, or $50 yearly, with 40 hours and 1,500 credits, as checked on 30 October 2026. Prices are per editor. Unused minutes and credits do not roll over, and an Underlord request costs what the work takes, so the same prompt can cost different amounts. Top-ups, on Creator and Business only, start at $35 for 350 AI credits or $25 for 5 media hours. A plan can be refunded within 48 hours of its invoice; top-ups cannot.

The IndieHacked breakdown

What it does

Descript transcribes what you import or record, and the transcript becomes the editor: cut, copy or move words and the video follows, with a timeline there when you need it. Studio Sound cleans up the audio, Remove Filler Words cuts the ums, Eye Contact corrects your gaze, and captions, translation, AI voices and avatars are in the same app. You record your screen and camera in Descript, or a remote guest in Rooms.

Underlord, the AI co-editor, takes a plain-language request such as a rough cut, captions in your brand colour or a 60-second highlight, and you pick the model behind it. Through the Descript MCP server, Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor can import media, edit with Underlord and publish a web link without you opening the app; the API does the same from code or Zapier. Both spend the plan's media minutes and AI credits.

Who it suits

Founders who make their own videos: a product demo, an onboarding tutorial, a recorded webinar, a podcast or an interview for the blog. Recording, editing and publishing sit in one app on Mac, Windows or the browser, so a solo founder can turn one long recording into the episode, its captions and the clips for social.

It fits a founder who already works in an AI assistant. Descript's MCP server connects through your Descript login, with no API token, and is scoped to one Drive, so you can ask Claude to find a project and cut a highlight reel. On data, Descript says the AI models it runs today use no Descript user data, and you can turn data sharing off in settings.

Not the right fit for

Founders who want AI to make a product ad from scratch, with no footage of their own. Descript is built around editing what you recorded, with generated media to fill gaps; Higgsfield, reviewed here, turns a product link into a video ad and keeps one character across shots.

Founders who edit on a phone or tablet, or who want a fixed monthly cost for AI edits. Descript runs on Mac, Windows and desktop browsers and is not designed for small mobile screens or tablets, and each Underlord request costs AI credits by the work it takes.
